In The Beginning (The Assessment)
Today is day one in my 5 year plan to realize the life of my dreams. This was the thought that came to me when I was sitting at work, listening to an old railroader talk to me about his retirement. At 60-years-old he was in great shape for act 3 of his life. He had worked for the railroad since high school, had saved his pennies and now had a life filled with travel and adventure all planned out. I was, one, happy for him, and two jealous.
My life has been a series of reactions to situations. I have a notion of where I want to go, but have never devoted the time and energy to putting down, not only the goal, but the actual steps needed to reach that goal, in writing, which is weird, since I'm great at meeting goals.
This blog is about that journey, five years to the life I want and deserve. Maybe you're looking for your real life too. Feel free to come along. If we put in the work and are honest I'm sure that 7/28/2022 will find us right where we want to be.
The Vision:
By the time 7/28/2022 roles around it is my goal to earn enough from my writing to fund my life, meaning my working any where else will be a choice not a necessity.
All three books in the Fat Chance series will be completed.
I will have sold at least 1 script for movie or TV.
I will owe no one any money. (personally)
My credit score will not cause me shame or tears.
I will be financially stable and have all the freedom that comes along with it.
I will still speak out against hate, bigotry and police brutality against people of color.
I will take Ryan on a trip outside this country.
I will take Ryan to Disney World.
I will become known in the publishing world as a legit author.
I will be fit, not skinny, but healthy.
The Work:
1. Financial freedom.
I have a lot of high achieving successful friends, some are more acquaintances, but some I'm really close to. All are educated, some are exceptionally talented. Most are married without children, but 1 is just like me, she came from where I came from. She too is a single parent, so struggled mightily with work and money.
The difference is, she decided that she wanted to clean up her finances so she could buy her own home. Not a home someone else had lived in, but built just for her and her family from the ground up. She took on extra jobs, saved every penny she could, and denied herself some luxuries along the way. Now she has her home earned by her and it is beautiful. #Noexcuses
I tell this story as an example that if you have a clear vision of what you want, the drive, and the willingness to work and sacrifice, anything is possible.
Financial health is the key for me. When I'm stressed about cash, I can't focus on anything else. It's hard to be creative when you're worried if you're going to have enough to get you back and forth to work everyday.
To that end, I'm going back to my old hated enemy, the budget. Not the wonderful one in my head that is as slippery as last night's dream, but the black and white written down budget, that tells you clearly that you are broke! I'm about to make my old enemy, my best friend. Caution fun times not ahead.
Full disclosure so many things are already set in stone through the end of this year, it may seem like I'm straying from the plan, but nothing will be scheduled in 2018 until the balance book is completely in the black and I can answer my phone without looking. #Goals
2. Writing
Most of us have something that makes our heart beat a little faster that seems like just a dream, whether it's writing, rapping, baking, or singing. I believe we are given that talent as a means to live the life we were meant for, but most of us miss it, forget it, or simply don't believe in it, so end up spending the majority of our lives in a cube hating the majority of our days.
I'm going to change that, by accepting that, yes I am a talented writer, and I was given that talent for a reason.
The world has changed. In the time we live in, we have something that generations before us never had, thanks to the internet, access. You don't have to wait for someone to discover you, you can present yourself, your writing, you music, your talent, and let the world be the judge.
I'm sorry #StephenKing I can't write everyday, and I definitely can't write 5 pages everyday, but I can promote or edit or share to find ways to keep spreading the word. So this is my promise to me, do something everyday to further my writing dreams. #HeyI'mOverHere
3. Fitness
My doctor says 20 pounds can erase my diabetes, so it's time to step it up literally, but not just steps, I will be holding myself accountable by logging every piece of food I put in my mouth. Whatever your number feel free to join me. I know a really great step group I can add you too. #byebye20lbs
July 28, 2022 may seem like a long time away, but I intend to meet it head on as a Financially stable, fit, writer.
Enjoy the ride
